November 13, 2009, Newsletter Issue #424: The Day of the 7's

Tip of the Week

It's Sunday, May 17th, and two teams will be battling for their playoff lives today. It's what every basketball fan asks for, two Game 7's...on the same day. The Rockets will try to go into L.A. and do the impossible, knock the consensus "best team from the west", out of the playoffs, without their two best players in Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming. The amazing thing is their third best player hasn't played well since his back to back ejections in game 2 and 3. Yes, I'm talking about that loveable maniac, Ron Artest who has been dreadful from the field the last three games, 2 of which have been Rockets blowouts. Many believe the Lakers are "soft", that outside of their superstar, Kobe Bryant, they don't have the "will" to win. I don't know if that's true, but every Laker can take responsibility for their last two losses in Houston, including Kobe. But the fact is, they have a chance to shut up all their critics with a strong performance today, which I am predicting. prediction: Lakers-107 , Houston- 92

The late game probably offers the best chance for drama as the Orlando Magic go into Boston to face the Celtics, where Boston is almost impossible to beat in game 7's over the course of sports history. But anyone who has watched the series would agree, Orlando is the better team right now, so if any home team has a chance to lose, it's Boston. I am personally not the biggest Boston fan, they got a little cocky after winning their ONE championship, a little too cocky for my liking. Do what the Spurs have done and then you have the right to get cocky. Win one in two decades and you might want to zip up the trash talk. Regardless of my dislike for Boston, I believe they would be the favorites to repeat with KG, unfortunately he has suffered one of the few serious injuries of his career, a bad knee sprain, which will cause him to be out for the entire playoffs. Because of that, I believe the better team, Orlando, will win on the road, albeit a close game. Prediction: Orlando-89, Boston-85

While the Friday and Saturday were miserable without my NBA action, it's well worth it now that Sunday has come around. Two game sevens...on the same day. It doesn't get any better than that. David Stern...I salute you...for once.
