April 15, 2005, Newsletter Issue #210: VALUE THE BASKETBALL

Tip of the Week

Now you can calculate values for many of the things players do to help their team win. Gaining possessions with rebounds, steals, and drawing charges are worth a point. Losing possession of the ball with turnovers, offensive fouls, or missed shots is like giving away a point. Just grabbed a defensive rebound or got a steal? That’s like a dollar in the bank that you can go invest in a shot attempt. Throw a bad pass and you just gave away $1. Or, on the average, you gave away a point. Knowing that each possession has a value, are you going to waste it on a high-risk shot or a lazy pass?

If the teams’ effective field goal percentage is 50% they are averaging about a point per possession. Of course sometimes the team will turn the ball over to lower their points per possession.. But then again some offensive rebounds will also come their way, or they may force some turnovers of their own to make up for that.

Fouling and getting fouled also has a value. It’s been determined that every trip to the foul line is worth about ¾ of a point because the overall free throw percentage is around 75%. Or $0.75 per trip in the monetary example. If you get fouled you help your team, but every time you send your opponent to the free throw line it costs your team.

It is important for the players to feel that possession of the basketball has a value and to respect that value. The player with the ball is the caretaker and has a special responsibility to the team. Everyone on the team is let down if the ball is carelessly turned over to the opponent. By limiting the other teams’ effectiveness on offense, you obviously help the comparison between how much “money” you are able to accumulate compared to your opponent. Everyone on the team has made an investment in that possession by working hard on defense, getting a rebound, making a steal. The coach must be the teams “financial advisor” and ensure that the style of play is conducive to a positive “cash flow’ and that the “proper investments” are being made.

Free throw = $1, Field Goal $2, Three Point Basket $3. The value of a possession – Priceless.
