October 25, 2002, Newsletter Issue #81: PASSING MADE PERFECT

Tip of the Week

When throwing a CHEST PASS, you should step into the pass with your knees bent. The pass should go from your chest to chest high of the receiver. If he is giving a "target hand," you should throw the ball there. After the pass, follow through, with the ball coming off of your fingertips, and your thumbs down.
On a BOUNCE PASS, the pass should travel from your waist to the receiver`s waist. It should bounce 2/3 of the way to the receiver, and you should follow through as in the chest pass.
An OVERHEAD PASS is usually used to throw the ball over the defense, so it should travel from over your head to over the receivers head. It should also come off of your fingertips. Probably the most important aspect is that it should have NO spin. This will allow the ball to travel straighter and be easier to catch.
The BASEBALL or HOOK PASS is used to advance the ball up the floor for greater distances. Your hand should be behind the ball to elimate any "sidespin." The baseball pass -should be thrown overhand, with your thumb down on the follow through the hook pass should be thrown with a stiff arm, again to eliminate any spin.
A final rule of thumb that we always use on all passes is to keep:
*BOTH EYES ON YOUR TARGET*
*BOTH HANDS ON THE BALL* and
*BOTH FEET ON THE GROUND*
