What is travelling?

Travelling

Travelling is called when A) a player slides, lifts, or changes his pivot foot B) Takes more than 2 steps after picking up his dribble. Loss of possesion will occur for a traveling violation. You have to dribble if you are advancing with the ball.

Can you travel whilst outside the court looking to pass in. eg move up the sideline to pass

that's correct. after a made basket you are aloud to run the baseline while throwing it in, otherwise, it would be a travel.
