August 1, 2003, Newsletter Issue #121: ROCKER SERIES

Tip of the Week

CATCH & SHOOT- Obviously, if the player catches the ball in a spot that he/she can make the shot he should catch, face the basket and shoot.
JAB N GO- If the defense is too close to take an open shot, the offense may need to foot fake, or "jab step", to drive by the defender. If the defense does not react to the fake, the player should just continue to drive in the same direction.
JAB-CROSSOVER-SWEEP`N`GO - If the defender reacts drastically to the initial jab step, the offense can then crossover and bring the ball to the opposite side of his body by "sweeping" it quickly below the defense`s hands so they don`t steal it and then drive in the opposite direction.
JAB-STEP BACK-SHOT- Sometimes the defense will jump back after the jab step and allow the offensive player to step back and shoot.
JAB-ROCK`N`GO - After the offense has used the "Jab-Step Back - Shot", the defnse may react drastically to the step back(or "rock"). This will allow the offense to fake the shot with a little "rock" after the jab step and then continue the drive in the direction of the initial jab step.
Mastering this series of moves and using them at the appropriate times will give any defensive player headaches when trying to figure out your next move, and make you a better offensive player.
