July 4, 2003, Newsletter Issue #117: MEET THE BASKETBALL

Tip of the Week

A term that we use quite often when speaking to recievers is, "come THRU the ball". When a pass is in the air, we want our players to continue running directly to the ball until they catch it. Players tend to stop prior to catching the ball, and that is the time that the defense steps in and deflects or steals the pass.
In getting open at the wing(free throw line extended) for a pass, it is important to move at a good angle towards the passer so you can beat the defense to the ball.
In the post, or around the key, there is usually a little tighter defense and much more contact. The reciever should try to maintain contact so he can feel the defense and hold the defender off with his body and a "pin arm". Then, as the ball is in flight, make a quick hop stop on two feet towards the ball to make the catch.
While the result may end in an intercepted PASS, the real turnover may be an incorrect catch. BOTH players must take a responsibility in making sure that every pass is completed.
