June 27, 2003, Newsletter Issue #116: STEP INTO YOUR PASSES

Tip of the Week

In their haste to make a pass, a player should not "pass across his body". By that I mean to be moving in one direction, and passing in another. When passing the ball, a player should step toward the receiver to put more power behind the pass. A phrase we always use is, "Both hands on the ball, both eyes on the target and both feet on the ground." These should be general rules of thumb when making any pass. If a passer makes a step and the reciever is not open, the player should pivot and try to find another potential reciever. If the offense has appropriate spacing (12`-15`) it is almost impossible for the passer to throw a two handed pass too hard. Step into your pass and put some `zip` on it so it reaches the reciever, and the defender does not have any time to deflect or steal it.
