June 21, 2002, Newsletter Issue #63: SUMMER LEAGUE/OFF-SEASON GAMES

Tip of the Week

Every year some of the teams returning players may need to step up and play more prominent roles. Substitutes become starters, role players become major contributors, and complimentary players may have to become the "go-to" player.
New players, who may have been "go-to" players on a lower level team, may need to realize that now they are going to be complimentary players. Shots that may have been good shots for them before, may not be in the framework of the new team. As time goes on, the players should get a feel for who fits into what role, and begin to develop confidence in one another.
Players may need to make position changes. Centers may become forwards, forwards may become guards and shooting guards may become point guards. Or vice-versa. This takes a period of adjustment.
The coach must also realize what these games are for.
Never forget the ultimate goal, to determine what players you need to play, how much, and to prepare players for the regular sesaon. Practice playing the way you will need to to beat your top competition during the regular season.
Even though every game worth playing is a game worth winning, continue to play substitutes to develop them for use when you need them. Play the defense that you want them to learn. Don`t get caught up in winning a meaningless summer game at the expense of preparing for the upcoming year.
