Was Jordan Overrated?

I figured I'd start this blog off right, with a little controversy, maybe even blasphemy depending on how big of a Jordan fan you are. I put this disclaimer out there off rip. I am a lifelong Piston fan, and during the three year stretch from '88-90' that the Pistons knocked Jordan and the Bulls out of the playoffs, I saw firsthand the NBA's attempt to "manufacture" this guy into God-like status.

While not even the biggest Jordan-hater on the planet could argue his ability. He IS one the greatest ball players of all time. No one could match his competitiveness, his heart, or his will to win. He played both ends of the floor with equal tenacity and in his prime, he really had NO weaknesses(ok, maybe blackjack and craps).

With all that said, where do I get off saying he's overrated?? Well I'll tell you why. The League needed a savior, someone to carry the NBA into the '90's. And who could blame them? Bird and Magic were passed their primes. The Bad Boys certainly were no poster boys. Barkley, Olajuwon, Drexler...while great players, none were ready to carry an entire league. The logical choice was the squeaky clean kid from Carolina, with the uncanny ability to fly, and the politician's smile.

Two big questions still remain to this day and I will attempt to answer them in future blogs. The first question: "How good would Jordan have been WITHOUT the benefit of the referees’ friendly whistles?" And the second question: "How can a team achieve greatness, if they themselves never defeat greatness?" Coming in the near future I will answer these questions and more. I will try and prove my case of "Why Jordan WAS Overrated". Peace.

Brian

Wasn't tryin' to be a hater. I said he was one of the best ballers in history. Just givin' my opinion on why he was a little overrated. I said off rip I'm a Piston fan, so of course I never was a Jordan-lover like most people, but I always respected him.

Well written. Jordan ruined the game, made it a superstars league, not a team game. I'd rather watch basketball "pre-Jordan" rather than now where its all show, and espn highlights. NBA turned into a product rather than a beautiful game like it was when Magic, Bird, and Isiah were banging heads.

Thanks Boggs. I figured about 1 out of 10 would agree with me. We're right on pace. lol. I agree with the majority of your statement also. While I don't believe Jordan ruined the game, he did make it a superstar's league which is definitley never a good thing.

You can try to prove your case, but doesn't mean it's right. You are funny though.

Jordan ruined basketball for me. The game stopped so many times if anyone even breathed on the guy. His free throws definately padded his numbers in a mediocre era.
