Basketball Post Play Tips

Using the Pivot Fake and Shoot Around the Basket

You begin by facing the basket. You pivot forward 180 degrees so that your back is to the basket.  Push the ball to the outside as you pivot.  The move is similiar to a step fake after you pivot. Now pivot backward to the original position facing the basket while holding the ball above your head.  Square up to the basket and shoot the ball.  Perform the drill from the left, right and center of the basket taking six shots in each position switch your pivot foot.

Executing the Jump Hook

The jump hook is executed just as you would a regular hook shot.  The differences are that you jump when you shoot the hook shot.  The ball is brought up higher and closer to the body and you flick the shot without using the arm.  If you start with your back to the basket and then face the basket, you shoot 36 shots.  Right-handed players use the left foot as the pivot foot.  Left-handed players use your right foot as your pivot foot.  If you start from the squared up position, you shoot 18 shots.

Executing the Hook Shot

Begin with the ball waist high, using your left foot as your pivot foot.  Face the basket one foot away at the right side of the basket. Turn sideways so that the shooting arm and the ball are straight out to the side, not in front of your body.  Both your shoulders and the ball are in a straight line.  The left elbow is forward and slightly up.  The right elbow is back and slightly down.  Squaring up to the basket is done by aligning the ball and the shoulders in a straight line with the point that you want to aim at.  Hook the ball directly over your head, using the wrist to flick the ball using the shooting arm as little as possible.  Move to the center and the left using the backboard for each position. Shoot the ball six times from each position.

Step fake to the left and pivot forward a quarter turn.  Square up to the basket and shoot the ball.  When you start with your back to the basket, step fake to the left. Pivot backward one quarter and turn toward the basket.  Square up to the basket and shoot the basketball.  The right foot is always the pivot foot for right-handed players.  The left foot is the pivot foot for lefties.  You shoot 18 shots from the left the center and the right of the basket.

You begin with your back to the basket on the right side using your left foot as your pivot foot.  Move one step to the left, so that after you pivot, you are in position to shoot.  Raise the ball over your head and then pivot forward  to face the basket.  Square up to the basket and then shoot the ball.  When you pivot on the right foot, set up one to the right to be in postion to shoot after you pivot.  Move from right, to center, to left taking six shots in each position.  Then switch your pivot foot.  You can also use your opposite hand when as well when you shoot.

Using the Step Fake Around the Basket

You begin by facing the basket with the ball waist high and your knees slightly bent. The step fake is done by slowly pushing the ball in a direction away from the pivot foot, while simultaneously stepping in the same direction. After the fake, bring your feet back to a position that is shoulder width apart while moving the ball over your head.  Square up to the basket and shoot the ball.  Shoot six shots from the right center and the left side of the basket.  Switch your pivot foot and repeat the sequence.
